Vinny O’Hare and Debbie Carney cover a range of topics in the latest Affiliate ABCs podcast. Vinny talked about taking pictures of fireworks on July 4th and passing out on the train in New Jersey. The trip was worth it though as the pictures came out good.
We talked a little about banner farm websites that guru’s are trying to sell to people. These people usually hang on for 6 months paying $29-$39 a month and then get replaced by new people trying to make millions online. If they mention the word “Millions” in their sales copy run! If they are living in a tropical place and telling you that you can do it also “run”. If you type in their system with the word scam after it in Google and there is a video of someone saying it isn’t a scam “Run”.
The latest thing the Guru’s are doing is holding actual seminars in hotels and giving out a bunch of info and have the people film a testimonial as they leave. Of course these people are going to talk highly since they just got brain overload and think it can be done. They are also making videos in case someone types in their names in Google talking positive. They are just covering all the bases.
We talked about focus and making better websites and not wasting time with many lousy websites.
We discussed Vinny’s recent trip to the Google offices for their AdSense in Your City. They talked about how mobile is going to pass the desktop next year and make sure your site is ready for it. WP-Touch is one solution and you can join the Small Biz Theme from Expand2Web’s affiliate program and sell their mobile ready theme.
Vinny talked about diversification and selling his print book to his niche email list.
We then discussed a few articles Vinny has written on his website that talked about Google Panda and Penguin recovery. Part of that is a second article Vinny wrote on increasing your average time on your site.
Use your Google analytics find out the date your traffic died and see what each algorithm did by using the SEOMOZ Google change log. You can figure out what Google was looking for when your site got hit or get a good idea.
We get into talking about what affiliates are doing wrong.
1) Some things that Affiliates are still doing is making websites with 20+ affiliate links on their homepage and not linking out to anything else. Why not just write add copy on your site with the words “Hello Google this is an affiliate site”
2) These websites are not getting natural back links because no one links to websites that have 20 unrelated products on them. They also don’t get any social media love.
3) Use Google analytics to show Google how good your site is. Don’t listen to anyone that says using Google analytics hurts your rankings.
4) Stop getting easy backlinks. If they are easy to get odds are Google doesn’t count them at all. Example: article directories
